Your watch needs care and cleaning to keep it looking presentable and working properly. The case and internal parts should be entrusted to an expert, as this is quite a complicated job and if done incorrectly, can lead to damage. You can clean the strap or bracelet yourself. Here are a few methods on how to clean your watch depending on its components.

Leather Strap

How To Clean Your Watch - Leather Strap

Leather is comfortable to wear, in addition, it looks very beautiful. But, unfortunately, natural leather – the material is rather capricious and not very long-lived. To maximize the life of the strap you need to follow a few simple rules:

  • Protect from moisture;
  • Dry carefully without hot air;
  • Avoid direct sunlight and open sources of heat;
  • Wipe once a week with a slightly wet cloth.

Such care is good for the appearance of your watch strap, but it cannot eliminate the possibility of hard dirt. There are several effective ways to remove them that are easy to use at home.

Method 1: Toothpaste, Baking Soda and Water

One of the best is to use toothpaste, baking soda, and water. Mix these ingredients in equal parts, gently apply the resulting mixture to the entire surface of the strap and after 30-60 minutes, wash it off with water. Dry the watch at room temperature.

Note that this method is only suitable for dark-colored straps!

If your watch strap is light-colored, you need to change the ingredients. Dip the white of a raw egg in a glass of milk and mix well. Soak a piece of cloth in the mixture and wipe the strap thoroughly. As in the first case, wash it and dry it.

Method 2: Soap

You can also dip the leather strap in a weak, warm soapy mixture and gently scrub it with a soft toothbrush, then rinse with water, remove excess moisture, and dry it in the open air. Not to use household cleaners, as it is impossible to predict their effect on the material.

Method 3: Composition for Cleaning Leather

Some manufacturers advise buying a special composition for cleaning leather from dirt, it works effectively and gently. It is enough to apply the product to a napkin and thoroughly wipe the strap. It costs quite a bit, but the effect will surpass all expectations.

Metal Bracelet

Metal is much more practical than leather, so a watch with a metal bracelet is easier to care for. The main thing is to avoid scratches as much as possible and to regularly clean the link areas from dirt and dust.

Method 1: Detergent

It is enough to dip the metal bracelet for 15-20 minutes in warm water, in which a few drops of any mild detergent must be dissolved beforehand. After a time, the links are cleaned with a cloth and a soft brush, then washed with water and wiped dry.

Method 2: Ammonia Solution

Ammonia solution will also help in cleaning a steel bracelet. Dissolve 2-4 drops of it in a glass of warm water and immerse the bracelet in it for 20 minutes, then take out, rinse under running water, wipe with a cloth and dry it.

You can use this technique for deep cleaning but not regularly. Cleaning jewelry with ammonia solution frequently can damage gold & silver, it is okay to use it on occasion but do not it to clean platinum or soft gemstones.

Warning: Please take note that ammonia-containing liquid and its fumes can cause burns and can be harmful depending on the degree of exposure. Make sure to handle this chemical with care.

Method 3: Baking Soda and Vinegar

Another effective method, which is also suitable for jewelry is a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Mix them in equal parts, gently apply the resulting paste to the links and wipe them with a soft cloth.

Gold Bracelet

A gold watch requires the same care as any other piece of this metal. It is so soft that it can be scratched if you overdo it. Therefore, you must proceed carefully, but with caution.

Method: Toothpaste

If you can’t clean your gold watch with water, you can use toothpaste. Don’t worry if the foam darkens – it’s nothing but dirt. After cleaning, be sure to remove any remaining toothpaste to avoid an unwanted reaction with the metal parts.

Remember also that you can always take your watch to a jeweler for cleaning and have it cleaned by a professional.
