It earns its nicknames “Fat Lady Rolex” and “Sophia Loren Rolex” after the thicker case, which was developed to house the newer movement with an upgraded GMT hand. The GMT Master II brought an independent GMT hand with it, which could be corrected without disturbing the other hands on the dial. Initially, this feature required a thicker case, which was eventually replaced with the slimmer 16710.
