Luxurious woman and soprano singer Carly Paoli is the official ambassador of Bedat & Co., taking part in most of its marketing campaigns. Her beauty and feminine refinement perfectly embody everything Bedat stands for.

Breitling

Founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, Breitling watches are known for their construction, precision, and aviation-inspired designs. Initially, the brand focused on producing watches for aviation professionals, but now they have expanded their functional and high-performance engineering to cater to various adventurous activities.

Characterized by large, easy-to-read dials and study cases, Breitling timepieces also incorporate chronograph and GMT functions. Both professionals and enthusiasts in aviation embrace Breitling watches due to their precision and functionality. The brand’s clientele includes pilots, astronauts, and notable adventurers. Big-time celebrities like John Travolta and David Beckham have been spotted wearing Breitling watches.

Not only are aviators able to appreciate a Breitling timepiece, but they are also favored by divers, sailors, and individuals who practice extreme sports.

Carl F. Bucherer

The history of technical watchmaking wouldn’t be the same without CFB. Since 1888, the homologous brand founded in Lucerne by Carl F. Bucherer has been researching and producing original, groundbreaking movements that help move the horological world in an exciting direction. In 1919, CFB launched its first wristwatch collection aimed at women, drawing inspiration from the trendy Art Deco style. This cemented one of the brand’s purposes, being in touch with women, listening to their needs, and catering to them by providing elegant wristwatches that could empower them, all of this inspired by the love Carl F. Bucherer had for his wife: Louise, who suffered a tragic death on the sea at a very young age.

Carl F. Bucherer brings a blend of non-paired skills with watchmaking expertise to the table. Each one of its mechanisms and movements is originally made by the brand, this authenticity has gained its international reputation. Its style encapsulates the finest intricate detailing and finishes that give an epic feel to any of its watches.

In 2001, CFB launched their Patravi collection, the first watch to ever be able to show three time zones at the same time. The Pratravi model is a sports timepiece ideal for explorers and travelers who need a reliable companion in their adventures. It is available in a wide range of styles to fit any taste and lifestyle.

Patravi’s success opened the door for more investment made by CFB, the main one being the acquisition of the Techniques Horlogères Appliquée Sûres workshop in 2007. This buy allowed CFB to dedicate more time to the research and development of its movements and complications, a step forward in the direction of the innovative appeal that sets CFB apart from other, non-artisan, generic brands.

It was the year 2008 when CFB made an impressive breakthrough that put the brand in the history books of watchmaking. This was the year the CFB A1000 Caliber model was launched to the market. Why is this model so important? It was the first automatic mechanical watch movement with a peripheral mounter power source to ever exist. This changed the history of watchmaking as we know it forever.

In 2013, CFC celebrated its 125th anniversary with an exhibition in Taiwan, presenting more than 200 watches from the company’s history. In the same ceremony, the brand launched the Manero Power Reserve model.

Moving forward to 2014, the Patravi special model: the Patravi ScubaTec SFV Special Edition became the official sponsor for the Swiss National Soccer Team, in a campaign for the upcoming World Cup celebrated that same year.

That very same year, the movie John Wick premiered and it featured a close-up of the Manero AutoDate model worn by the one and only Keanu Reeves. From then on, other celebrities have endorsed CFB by wearing their pieces to red carpets and important social events. The brand has hired many ambassadors during its time, like Hockey Star Nico Hischier and soccer player Ricardo Rodríguez.

At this point, you may be wondering what happened to the CFB’s compromise with its compromise on female empowerment. Well, it never went away. While their most recent collections have been received better by a masculine audience, The company currently sells 25,000 watches a year, and only 40% of them are acquired by women. This doesn’t mean CFB has stopped catering to women in their marketing campaigns and choice of ambassadors. Female soccer player Ramona Bachmann, award-winning beautiful Chinese actress Li Bingbing, and Olympic and World Cup winner Wendy Holdener are global ambassadors for the brand.

Chopard

The history of Chopard begins in 1860 in Sonvilier, Switzerland. Master pocket-watch maker Louis-Ulysse Chopard, driven by his creativity, had the purpose of democratizing the use of the wristwatch. At the time, using a wristwatch was considered feminine, men used pocket watches only. Intelligently, Chopard started making watches based on these gender norms to gain prestige and recognition first. When he was well-positioned in the watchmaking scene, he defied gender norms and started manufacturing watches for any gender and age group. Soon after, Chopard’s sales went through the roof and it became a luxury watch brand.

Chopard Yellow

The brand started to forge a name for itself when, in the year 1885, it became the official timekeeper for the “Tir Fédéral”, the Swiss Railway. During that time, Chopard also received commissions from the Russian Tsar Nicolas II.

Chopard’s signature is the dial with floating diamonds inside, a design that has inspired other creators like Jason of Beverly Hills. The way Chopard does it involves the dial containing the diamonds and two sapphire gems holding it together.

In 1980 Chopard delved into the world of sports watches for men by launching the St. Moritz model. An exquisite, expensive sports watch crafted in stainless steel. A few years later, in 1983, Chopard launched one of its most iconic wristwatches to date, a piece with a combination of steel and diamonds called Happy Diamonds, including the floating diamonds dial and the two sapphire crystals. It immediately became a sales success because it set the trend of the sporty-chic look adopted by beautiful high-class women in the 80s. The most complex Chopard’s timepiece is considered to be the L.U.C. Full strike, a finely crafted minute repeater made from ethical gold, this piece was awarded with the 2017 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in the Mechanical Exception category.

Chopard watches have been featured in Hollywood movies. This is a major point regarding their spike in popularity in the United States. Furthering their interests in being an active part of the international cinema scene, in 1998 Chopard became the official sponsor for the Cannes Film Festival, also manufacturing the trophy for their most prestigious award, the Palme d’Or. Thanks to this, lots of celebrities wear Chopard to red carpets and movie premieres. Names like Viola Davis, Soo Joo Park, Simona Tabasco, Zhou Yilong, Amy Jackson, and Zhang Yuqi have worn Chopard timepieces to the Cannes Red Carpet event.

In 2015, one of the most beautiful actresses in French cinema history, Marion Cotillard, was invited to be part of Chopard’s team as a guest designer for a jewelry piece. More recently, in 2021, Julia Roberts became an ambassador for the Happy Diamonds collection in preparation to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic model. Julia Roberts is the perfect pick because she embodies what Happy Diamonds stands for sexyness, beauty, approachability, and an easy-going personality.

Chronoswiss

A contemporary brand with an already rich tradition that took the world of watchmaking by surprise just a few years after its foundation in 1982. At the time, master watchmaker Gerd R. Lang already had a long career working in the watch manufacturing process for another high-end brand but was fired during that company’s economic crisis. Then he decided to open his workshop and did it in the city of Munich. Soon after, he moved his project into the hearth of the watch manufacturing scene: Lucerne, Switzerland.

Specializing in mechanical watchmaking and Swiss ETA movements, Chronoswiss has always presented an interesting mix of tradition and modernity. Their timepieces have been described as “consciously anachronistic” by GQ magazine due to the brand’s purpose of taking the best out of tradition and creating revolutionary approaches using it. The brand has gained its place in watchmaking history by inventing one element of a watch that we take for granted but not so long ago it was an invention that changed the horological world forever: the watch dial.

1988 marks the year Chronoswiss launched its most iconic watch to date, the Régulateur. It is considered to be a revolutionary timepiece as the first wristwatch with a regulator layout, this means the hours, minutes, and second are displayed individually by their own set of hands. Their design had the anachronistic approach mentioned above, it looked like a pocket watch from two centuries ago embedded into a wristwatch strap.

Not all Chronoswiss models have a traditional feel to them. While they are certainly rooted in traditional hand-crafting methods and classical movements, their looks appeal to the modern eye. One particular example of this is the Delphis model, with a modern design and functionalities that include hour jumping, moon phases, and quarter repeaters.

Corum

Manufacturers of some of the most unusual watches in the world, Corum came into existence in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland in the year 1955 thanks to the minds of René Bannwart and his uncle Gaston Ries. From the beginning, the brand’s purpose was to create imaginative watches that looked like no other piece. Thanks to this ethos, Corum has achieved international recognition and his creators have been able to see their inventions, each collection more adventurous than the last, come to life.

One of their most successful models is the Coin Watch. The name of this piece is quite literal: the watch’s dial is constructed on top of a 20 USD coin, with a complex movement that allows the hands to give the time while not fully revealing its mechanism. Truly a statement piece, it has been owned by presidents of the United States Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton.

The Admiral collection is another Corum classic, It made its debut in 1960 as a testament to the value of a Corum piece, its unique, yet elegant design, and its exclusivity and prestigious standing in the horological world. But maybe the most iconic model from Corum is the Concept Watch, an experimental watch with an original, never seen before, movement, equipped with a flying tourbillon and sapphire crystal bridges.

Aside from world leaders, Corum has gained such relevance as a creative watch manufacturer that it became the brand of choice of pop artist and tastemaker Andy Warhol. Their main ambassadors are Miralem Pjanic, one of the best midfield soccer players in the world, and Chinese actor and model Mr. Hu Bin, an icon of masculinity in the Eastern world.

The brand’s ethos is to bring creative exuberance to its craftsmanship, and innovation that brings a breath of fresh air to the world of watchmaking. de Grisogono’s designs emphasize the display of its functions through the dials, which showcase original creative complications that truly push boundaries in the art of measuring time.

With more than twenty watch collections under its belt, de Grisogono can achieve all of its creative goals thanks to a team of researchers and developers living in their facilities that also function as a workshop, located in Plan-les-Ouates. Their most famous models are the Instrumento NO° Uno and the Meccanico dg, both being a feast for the eyes, with their complications and movements fully on display, encrusted with black diamonds. Franck Muller’s purpose as a brand is the blending of powerful boldness and out-of-this-world creativity, Their original designs are composed of complicated movements that not only compose the practicality and precision any high-end watch should provide, they are also a feast to the senses. Frank Muller’s timepieces are truly technical spectacles. The timepieces’ ornaments are all crafted by hand and include engraving, spotting, bevelling, and mirror polishing.

Their signature model, one of the greatest achievements of what is humanly possible in watchmaking, is the Crazy Hours line. A timepiece where the order of the numerals is wrong? No problem! The outstanding mechanism jumps from one hour to the next in chronological order. The order displayed on the dial may be wrong, but the time it gives is correct. A clever and exciting watch that fully encapsulates what it is like to experience Franck Muller’s creation: the owner won’t be capable of taking his eyes off the watch, waiting a second after second for the hour to change.

Another famous model is the Aeternitas Mega, famous for being the most complicated watch in the world, composed of more than 1500 technological elements that work together in a full dial display, a fascinating display of technology and craftsmanship.

Tissot is considered to be an affordable luxury brand, which means one of its timepieces would make an ideal first watch for enthusiasts who are just starting their collection.

At first, as was customary, Tissot manufactured Pocket Watches, but this changed soon as the brand’s quality became known, allowing it to expand all over Europe. In 1880, Tissot made its first move toward solidifying itself as a household name by registering its iconic logo along with the slogan “Innovators by tradition”

That phrase has rang true throughout Tissot’s history. Tissot trademark is looking at traditional mechanisms in watchmaking and upgrading or replacing them with better inventions. In 1930, Tissot produced the first antimagnetic wristwatch in the world. The Tissot Antimagnetic line came at a time when electricity was becoming prevalent in everyday life. The magnetism associated with electrical waves was influencing the wristwatches’ mechanisms and movements, a problem Tissot solved by commissioning the task to a group of researchers and then applied to all of their collections up until now.

This innovation alone is enough to put Tissor in the history books of watchmaking. But it didn’t end there., the brand has developed cases made of different materials like plastic, stone, and wood. More recently, in 1999, Tissot presented the T-Touch technology. With a series of Sapphire crystals, the T-Touch model implemented 25 touch functions, making it the prototype for what we know as a smartwatch today.

Bell & Ross

Passion projects often come with the best results. This is the case of Bell & Ross, a brand that started as a college assignment of friends Bruno Belamich and Carlos A. Rosillo in 1992. Their ethos and objectives were pretty clear from the start: inspired by military history and designs, they wanted to be part of it not only aesthetically, but as an active part in the advancement of military technology.

Pilots were some of the first professionals who saw the wristwatch as an essential part of their labor, so Bell & Ross made its purpose of providing them with timepieces that not only are inspired by aircraft designs but feature functionalities that would be useful in an actual battlefield or stealth mission. The same year Bell & Ross was founded, it became the official supplier of timekeeping devices for the French Air Force. Just a couple of years after, in 1994, the Space 1 model, featuring an anti-magnetic case, was the first French wristwatch to ever be worn in space. The accomplishments don’t end there, in 1998 Bell & Ross beat the Guinness World Record for a water-resistant watch at 11,000 meters below sea level.

These facts alone had made Bell & Ross a household name in the field of watchmaking aimed at professional use. From astronauts and pilots to divers, men who accomplish challenges in the field endorse and trust the brand. Professions that require the most accuracy in timekeeping like bomb disposal experts, who can’t afford the slightest mistake that could cost human lives, use Bell & Ross.

The hyper-focus the brand has on practicality doesn’t diminish its luxury status. The materials and features the timepieces have may not be ideal for red carpets or socialite events, but their expensiveness is justified when put into perspective in front of other luxury brands: what other manufacturers expend on aesthetically pleasing finishes or shiny materials, Bell & Ross does it to add mind-blowing functionalities.

The brand divides its collections into three main breaches: Aviation, Marine, and Vintage. The Bomb Disposal model from the Vintage collection, as its name states, is ideal for neutralizing bombs, equipped with an anti-magnetic case, and perfect accuracy.  The Hydromax 11,000 M model from the Marine collection is the timepiece that earned the World Record. The BR 01 RED Radar model from the Aviation collection is one of the most unique watches in the world, inspired by how an infrared radar works, the timepiece not only reads the time but can be programmed to function as an actual radar mounted on the deep red digital dial.

Since 2016, Bell & Ross has been the official sponsor of the Renault Formula 1 Team, to which the brand launched the Alpine F1 Team collection to commemorate the partnership. To tap other markets outside the brand’s niche, it has appointed female Formula 1 Pilot Carmen Jorda as the official ambassador for their feminine watch collection. For the Eastern market, Bell & Ross appointed three Malasyan ambassadors, actor Syafiq Kyle, YouTuber Chan Phei Yong, and stylist Ethan Chu

Boucheron

With family values at the forefront, Frederic Boucheron founded, in 1858, Boucheron, a brand dedicated to designing and manufacturing luxury jewelry and timepieces. The brand’s purpose is to create complications constructed on watches that appear expensive and luxurious to a very select clientele of exclusive personalities. In the past, Boucheron’s aesthetics captivated royalty, having received commissions from French, Russian, and Egyptian nobles

Boucheron manufactures jewelry and fragrances mainly, but their watchmaking is on par with the best watchmakers in the country. The brand takes its craft seriously, researching and producing its movements and complications. The Serpent collection perfectly showcases the blend of elegance and a classic feel, with a pair of drops carved in the iconic Serpent Line trademarked by Boucheron. The Serpent watches are made from Gold and Diamonds encrusted in a white-pearl dial. This watch is meant for women in positions of power who don’t want to lose their feminine side. The Reflet collection is another example of a watch that can be worn by a boss girl. A rectangular dial  Roman numerals constructed on a steel bracelet, a piece that will add character to any outfit.

To this day, Boucheron keeps captivating personalities who are obsessed with their pieces. Names like Joséphine Baker, Edith Piaf, Gwen Stefani, and Ava Gardner are proud owners of Boucheron jewelry and timepieces.

The brand has recently delved into the eastern market, with two new ambassadors: beautiful Korean actress Han So-Hee and Chinese model and actor Xiao Zhan.

Breguet

The history of watchmaking can’t be told without putting Breguet as one of the protagonists. An old tale of luxury and watchmaking started in 1775 when Abraham-Louis Breguet opened its first store in pre-revolution Paris. Breguet was the inventor of various watchmaking innovations that completely changed the horological scene forever. Nowadays talking about a tourbillon or a self-winding watch is a common thing, but back when Breguet walked this earth these inventions mesmerized enthusiasts and members of the royal court alike.

It can be safely stated that the number one Breguet’s contribution to the history of watchmaking is the wristwatch, personally commissioned by Caroline Bonaparte as a way to measure time without compromising her outfits. Yes, the modern standard for timekeeping wouldn’t exist if Greguet never wondered how a woman could keep the time like men did using a pocket watch. This doesn’t mean women didn’t own pocket watches at the time, but they did it more as a symbol of power and status than out of practicality.

The history of Breguet’s most famous watch, maybe the most expensive watch in the world, is tied to this wristwatch/pocket-watch dichotomy. Queen Marie Antoinette, fascinated by Breguet’s inventions, was very vocal about her admiration for the watchmaker. So, in 1783, one of the many lovers of the reigning Queen of France commissioned a pocket watch that would set him apart in the eyes of Marie Antoinette. Breguet took this commission very seriously and it took 34 years to complete the most complicated pocket watch any human had seen at the time: The world-famous No.160 grand complication, also known simply as the Marie Antoinette Pocket Watch. Sadly, Marie Antoinette never got to see the watch completed, as she was executed during the revolution 4 years before. But the history of this legendary watch doesn’t end there. It was safely kept under the strict supervision of the Museum for Islamic Art in Jerusalem, but it was inexplicably stolen in 1938. Thankfully for historians and Horlogerie enthusiasts, the watch was retrieved in 2007.

The compromise to this gargantuan project was the best piece of advertisement Breguet could hope for. Following that commission came assignments from Louis XVI. After Breguet’s death, the prestige of the brand remained intact, and important figures like Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, King George III, Queen Victoria, and, in most recent times, Winston Churchill and Vladimir Putin have commissioned pieces from the brand.

One of Breguet’s slogans “In every woman is a queen” is directly related to the brand’s muse: Marie Antoinette. Recognizing a Breguet watch is easy for those who know, its design style includes coin-edge cases, guilloché dials, and blue pomme hands. The Tradition collection is a testament to the brand’s rich history, featuring a classical mechanism constructed over a modern-looking dial and bracelet. The Classique collection showcases what a complication manufactured by Breguet could look like, showing that the brand is still not afraid to take on big projects.

Breguet remains an exclusive brand, only producing around 18,000 pieces a year. Only a select few personalities get to wear a . TV icons like Luke Brian or world leaders like Nicolas Sarkozy and famous, charismatic president Vladimir Putin are among the proud owners of an original Breguet watch.

Chanel

Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel may be the most influential fashion designer in the world. She founded the Chanel brand in 1910, which started as a small studio in Paris. Designing and selling hats to the so-called mundane and half-mundane women of Parisian nightlife, little did she know Chanel was setting the foundations for the biggest, most well-known fashion brand to ever exist.

Coco Chanel is not only an icon of style but also an icon of women’s empowerment. Her purpose was to create fashion that would speak to the women of her time, with simple, elegant, and comfortable design, prioritizing practicality over ornament without losing the tasteful appeal that defines a luxury brand. She wasn’t afraid of transgression so she used navy blue or gray on her designs, colors that were considered masculine by French fashion standards. Contemporary luxury brands tried too hard to remain exclusive with a small pool of high-end clientele mostly composed of royalty and world leaders; Chanel changed this forever.

One of Chanel’s main contributions to fashion history was dropping the corset silhouette that was reigning in women’s fashion and replacing it with more functional garments that emphasized women’s lines, thus making them more flattering without being constricted. Then, in 1925, came Chanel’s famous logo, two capital C letters intertwined, a symbol that could be recognized by habitants of every major city in the world. The logo opened the door for the brand to sell licenses and reach untapped markets. To this day, the Chanel suit and the No. 5 perfume are cultural phenomena that transcend the world of luxury items.

Chanel’s style is characterized by mind-blowing designs and high-quality products. Its pricing is high, but still affordable for medium-high class citizens, and, more importantly, its value and durability are guaranteed. The materials used during the manufacturing of the pieces are top-notch, including but not limited to leather, tweed, and soft weightless silk. The construction of Chanel’s designs is meticulous and approached with precision.

In 1987, Chanel tried its hand at watchmaking by launching their first collection: the Premiére watch. By 1995, the brand launched its second collection, the Matelasse model. But it wasn’t until 2001 that Chanel hit the jackpot with the J12 collection, an iconic unisex watch that put Chanel on the map of timepiece manufacturing. Soon after, in 2002, the brand opened its first watch and accessories boutique on Madison Avenue, New York.

The J12 model became so famous, there have been many celebrities who own a piece. The appeal of a sports watch with the mechanism of an artisan piece, powered by a mechanical movement with automatic winding, the J12 was inspired by the competitive and exclusive world of yachts. Chanel has exclusive ambassadors for the J12 and has launched a marketing campaign with names like Keira Knightley, Ali MacGraw, Vanessa Paradis, Anna Mouglalis, Carole Bouquet, and Lily-Rose Depp, as well as Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Liu Wen, all them iconic women in their respective fields.

Chaumet

history of Chaumet goes hand in hand with the history of France as a country. One of the oldest jewelry houses in the world, Chaumet was founded in 1780 in a thriving Paris, by Marie-Étienne Nitot, who at the time was the apprentice of the official jeweler of Marie-Antoniette. The contribution of Chaumet to the expansion and solidification of French culture as the cosmopolitan luxury capital of Western Europe can be traced back up to two centuries. This influence becomes palpable in Chaumet’s involvement in world-defining historical political events, Napoleon himself commissioned Chaumet the sword used in his coronation ceremony, and Pope Pius VII commissioned his papal crown, these pieces are now considered to be part of History and valued in the billions. Some years later, around 1810, the brand became the official jeweler to Empress Josephine, the event that defined the path Chaumet was going to take as a luxury, high-end brand. These historical facts are enough to safely state that without Chaumet jewelry as we know it today would not exist

The purpose of Chaumet as a brand has been the same from the start: making France the luxury capital of the whole world. A goal that was historically accomplished when the Bourbon monarchy was restored, one of the most influential families in the world, not only in political matters but also in aesthetics. With time, Chamet’s fame expanded to a more diverse clientele, like Indian Princesses and other sorts of alternative royalty.

In recent years, more exactly in 2010, Chaumet launched a collection and exhibition dedicated to its timeless muse: Empress Josephine. The collection is inspired by the Empress’ femininity and royal elegance. In 2020, the brand celebrated its 240th anniversary., a feat almost no other luxury brand can be proud of.

Chaumet timepieces are inspired by its history, with its main motif being Empress Josephine herself. The Hortensia collection is named in honor of the Empress’s daughter Hortense. An elegant and timeless collection that displays luxury and delicate, impeccable craftsmanship. Hortensia flowers adorn a deep green dial, containing leaf-shaped hands, built on an interchangeable bracelet. The most expensive and luxurious timepiece Chaumet has ever made is the Josephine Aigrette Imperiale. A masterful modern reinterpretation of Empress Josephine’s favorite shape: the pear-shaped cut. This is a piece that will automatically grant character and grace to the lady lucky enough to wear it. Entirely made from diamonds, this femininity-boosting creation is made from 18 carats of white gold and reads the time with sword-shaped hands.

Chaumet has been endorsed by some personalities in Europe and the rest of the West, so it holds a special meaning that one of their global ambassadors is beautiful actress Song-Hye Kyo, once again setting the brand’s status as a French powerhouse with an undoubtedly global influence.

Dior

The House of Dior was founded in 1946 by iconic luxury fashion designer Christian Dior, one of the most powerful names to ever exist in the industry. Dior set shop at 30 Avenue Montaigne, Paris. The brand’s rich history not only resonates in French culture, it has also had an everlasting influence on fashion and trends all over the world. The brand started as a clothing manufacturer only, but in two years it began expanding with the launch of a perfume line for women.

From there on, Dior’s name proliferated and the next step in building its empire was opening a boutique on the luxurious 5th Avenue of New York City, quickly followed by a trip to Australia where Dior became fascinated by the country and commissioned entrepreneur David Jones to import Dior pieces and sell them in his boutique. This soiled the seed of a marketing model that will be defining for the Dior brand some years later: the franchise model

the mission of conquering the fashion world in mind, Dior became a household name. The brand wasn’t only valuable because of its exquisite luxurious items, but its literal value on the market. At the time, if a manufacturer was big enough on quality to meet the Dior company’s standard, that manufacturer was able to buy the license to use the Dior logo and stamp it on its production. This implementation was the cause for the Dior brand to explode internationally, manufactures all over the world that met the criteria needed, were producing high-quality ties, furs, hats, gloves, headbands, traveling bags, and any other luxurious fashion items a contemporary lady of the world might need.

In 1957, Christian Dior died of a heart attack in Montecatini, Italy. As a consequence, Yves Saint Laurent, who at the time was only a young art director, had to step up and assume the Chief Of Staff position. The death of the founding father of Dior created an environment of uncertainty in the company for a while, but with the efforts of the staff, the brand managed to stay afloat.

New times came with new ideas, in 1975, the luxury fashion brand opened its watchmaking workshop in La Chaux-De-Fonds, Switzerland, to translate the brand status into luxurious watchmaking. Dior’s watchmaking ethos is all about luxury-oriented creativity and manufacturing. Their timepieces keep the level of exclusivity and expensiveness that has characterized the brand over the years.

The Chiffre Rouge collection is the epitome of Dior’s understanding of matters like elegance and high-fashion aesthetics. Fashion-oriented women will fall in love with a timepiece like this: sexy, yet sporty; functional but flashy. Another iconic model is the D de Dior, an exquisitely crafted dial with a bracelet with a net that simulates intricate geometric lines, in 2023, the brand launched a tribute to this model, respecting its classic appeal with a slightly more modern approach.

An unusual data about Dior’s brand is that their main customers are Chinese and Eastern women. This is why the brand has invested in marketing campaigns across those countries, Lang Lang, a famous Chinese piano virtuoso, has recently become one of Dior’s global ambassadors. Other celebrities like Sharon Stone have also endorsed Dior while they were ambassadors, in this case, the famous movie star was an ambassador for Dior’s timepieces.

The main inspiration for David Webb’s jewelry is nature, especially exotic animals: frogs, zebras, snakes, monkeys, you name it. He used to think women were bored of “jewelry looking like jewelry”, so creating pieces that were one-of-a-kind was his formula for success.

Italy

Buccellati

Right at the end of the First World War, when the global society was healing, Mario Bucellati decided it was time to stop being an apprentice and forge his legacy. In 1919, he founded the Buccellati luxury jewelry brand in the thriving city of Milan, at Via Santa Margherita 5. His formative years helped immensely to fully grasp the “Milanese spirit” of jewelry craftsmanship. Mario’s work was so outstanding he quickly became recognized for its style heavily rooted in ancient Italian tradition, which he made its trademark identity. Buccellati is not a brand that follows trends, it puts an effort into making its pieces timeless.

Mario, as one of the most prestigious Italian jewelers, gained an exclusive clientele, including the famous poet and womanizer Gabriele D’Annunzio, who loved to give gifts to his female lovers. Word about Mario’s eccentric baroque designs and heavy focus on design and exquisite craftsmanship traveled fast, Buccellati objects started to be sought after by the Italian royal family, as well as the Pöpe and other celebrities of the time.

In 1973, Buccellati started the Italian Gemological Institute. Dedicated to the research of gemstones to discover new ways of manufacturing them.

Welcoming the new millennium, Buccellati launched its first watch collection in the year 2000. The designs were loyal to its style and high-quality craftsmanship. The Tulle watch collection, made for ladies, comes with a Swiss quartz movement, 18k white gold with diamonds, and assorted gems depending on the model. It is inspired by the Art Deco style. BVLGARI

Greek-bred master silversmith Sotirio Bulgari founded the BVLGARI jewelry house in 1884. With one purpose in mind, to pay stylistic tribute to the Roman Empire, BVLGARI introduced innovations that changed the jewelry-making game, setting innovations that are still regarded as iconic feats of modern craftsmanship. BVLGARI opened its first boutique in Via Sistina, Rome; from that point, the brand expanded all over the city.

When it comes to jewelry, the BVLGARI style can be described as eccentric Italian.  From luxury jewelry pieces to watches, the brand incorporates intricate designs that try to evoke Roman history and values.

BVLGARI benefited from the second world war, as their popularity exploded after it ended and few competitors had access to the best materials, like white metals and diamonds. Sometime after, around 1970, BVLGARI’s international expansion took place, by opening boutiques in New York, Geneva, Monte Carlo, and Paris. The brand’s international appeal skyrocketed when other country’s clientele discovered their pieces’ angular forms, strong colors, oval elements, and use of white and yellow gold

5Untitled 1

For men, BVLGARI launched the Octagonal watch. An array of complications encased in fine craftsmanship. A watch made to catch the eye of those on the known. Its design is that of a classical sports watch but with an unconventional take: an octagonal dial.

As of today, BVLGARI has more than 300 boutiques all over the world, The most famous of them is located in Tokyo’s Ginza Tower. A 10-storey building covering 940 square meters of pure retail floor space filled with BVLGARI jewelry and timepieces. Zendaya is an influential woman in the movie industry and that’s why she was made ambassador in 2020. In 2021 BVLGARI made the jaw-dropping addition of the beautiful Anne Hathaway as a global ambassador. For the eastern market, BVLGARI has included BLACKPINK member Lisa as another global ambassador.

Damiani

With Eighteen Diamonds International Awards winnings under its belt, Damiani is one of the most influential jewelry houses in the world. It was founded in 1924 by master goldsmith Enrico Grassi Damiani in the Italian district of Valenza, one of the most important jewelry hubs in the country. Producing and distributing their pieces in a small workshop, the Damiani family quickly became the official jewelers for important Italian families. The main thing that set Damiani apart from the rest of jewelry manufacturers was the invention of a certain item crucial for retail-oriented business models that we take for granted today but was a big innovation in its time: the catalog. The son of Enrico thought about putting all their collections on paper with set prices for potential clients to see, this skyrocketed the number of commissions and, as a direct consequence, their prestige.

Damiani kept coming up with revolutionary ideas in the field of marketing. The brand was the first one to launch a campaign with photoshoots not only depicting big personalities like Sharon Stone but also including their testimonials about how they felt about the pieces being displayed. This put the photographer in a central position concerning the success of a collection, thus inventing the high-end jewelry photoshoots that are mandatory for big manufacturers today. In the 90’s Damiani finally opened its first boutique and started expanding internationally. Nowadays, Damiani has successful boutiques all over the world: Paris, Shanghai, Singapore, Seoul and Dubai.

The emphasis Damiani has put on the Asian market can also be noted in their picks for who becomes an ambassador for the brand. Their most recent acquisition is Korean actress Lee Sung-Kyoung, a perfect choice due to her authentic beauty and charm. For the West, Damiani is closely working with Romanian actress and model Madalina Ghenea, regarded as one of the most beautiful women in the world, who makes sure to post Damiani’s pieces on her social media.

Damiani watches are luxury and good taste incarnated. All of their exclusive collections present features such as diamond-covered dials and bracelets. Their Ego collection perfectly showcases their dedication to craftsmanship, the timepieces are medium-sized with Arabic numerals and indexes, leather straps with animal print motifs, and all of them are water resistant up to five atmospheres. Cooper

In the world of alternative watchmaking, Alexander Cooper is one of the protagonists. Exploring the line between parody and functionality, Coope has carved a target audience all by himself and his personality: men, more exactly manly men. This may come off as an exaggeration for those who are not as invested in the watchmaking culture, but the productions surrounding the brand speak for themselves. Aside from military watches, Alexander Cooper has also delved into the world of scriptwriting and directing hyper-masculine movies that are meant to be parodies of testosterone-fueled military B-tier films from the 80s. A couple of his movies have even been banned from streaming services because of their erotic content, furthering his status as an alternative, punkish watchmaker.

Alexander Cooper will appeal not only to military buffs but members of the militia themselves. Below the caricature facade, lies a compromise with functionality and delivering a well-crafted product. Cooper watches are no joke by themselves, they are ideal for heavy use in an actual battlefield, with dials constructed as hard as a tank and cases that can resist depth dives.

Most of Cooper’s models are made with titanium and glass, while the most expensive lines, ideal for special events, military galas, and ceremonies, also include sapphire crystals.

As of now, Garrard owns more than 35 stores in major capitals all over the world.

While Garrard does not manufacture watches anymore, their timepieces have made history because of the collaboration with the British military forces during the Second World War, where the brand designed timekeeping instruments for the Lancaster and Wellington Bomber Aircraft. Garrard timepieces have gained cult status and are sold by antique dealers to enthusiasts and collectors willing to bid for them at exclusive auctions.

Garrard watches were characterized by ivory cream dials, cases made with gold, and contemporary designs that exuded manly elegance. Functionality was one of their strengths, with a date function and precise timekeeping. They are ideal to wear to an important business meeting and also as evening wear in elegant settings like dinners, galas, and auctions.

The most expensive watch in the world

Grima

More than a jewelry brand, Grima is a household name that transcends time and vapid trends. Anglo-Italian jewelry designer Andrew Peter Grima is regarded as the most influential designer from the post-war era, also called the father of modern jewelry. This speaks volumes about Grima’s place in the contemporary world of jewelry design and how appreciated and sought-after his pieces are. Grima started manufacturing jewelry around 1945 in London and by 1960 he already had a studio in Jermyn Street, Mayfair. His style included flamboyant modern cuffs and jagged gold pendants. All of the gems he used were cut in Germany.

During his life, Grima won several awards, including the Duke of Edinburgh Prize for Elegant Design in 1966, the Queen’s Award for Export, and the De Beers Diamonds International Award, which he won an outstanding total of thirteen times. His main clients came from British royalty, Grima designed pieces for Princess Margaret and Queen Elizabeth II. As of now, pieces that were originally designed by Grima can sell for thousands of dollars at certified auction houses.

While Grima mostly designed jewelry, he also collaborated with famous watch brands and produced widely celebrated collections of timepieces. Grima knew how to make watches and elevate them to the status of artistic pieces with universal appeal. One of his collaborations was with Omega in 1969, producing two main collections. The first one was the Elegance line, a series of gold watches with smoky quartz dials. The second line was called Greenland, yellow gold watches with pink tourmaline glass.

The second Grima collaboration was with Pulsar, creators of the digital watch as we know it today, in the mid-seventies. As the collaboration was to manufacture LED watches, it gave Grima a chance to experiment with a more modern approach to watchmaking. This collection may be one of the most exclusive in the world, as it never was launched to the public, the only known pieces only surfaced after Grima’s passing and are part of two private collections. The pieces are made from gold and can be described as flamboyant, eccentric, and unique.

Japan

Casio

Creativity and Contribution. Those words have been resonating in the electronic innovation scene all over the world since 1946. Tadao Kashio was an engineer living in Mitaka, Tokyo. He had experience working in the product line of companies that developed mechanical and electronic gadgets, something Japan has always been known for. Culturally, Japan is considered to be a technologically advanced society, sometimes it may seem that the future comes to Japan first and then it spreads to the rest of the world, especially when it comes to entertainment devices, like TVs, videogames, and music-related gadgets. But Casio, as a brand, took this Japanese driving force and implemented it in everyday technological gadgets that make people’s lives easier and move society forward. To Contribute by Creating in mind, Tadao Kashio founded the world-renowned, most famous electronics manufacturer in the world, Casio.

As stated above, Casio manufactured a lot of electronic devices from digital cameras to electronic pianos, but it also has a wing dedicated to the development of digital wristwatches in the legendary district of Shibuya, Japan. Casio has developed technologies such as water and heavy impact resistance to make their watches more durable, allowing for more innovations to be implemented in future models.

In 1974, Casio started its legacy in watchmaking by releasing its first watch. It was an electronic wristwatch called the CASIOTRON QW02 model. It is regarded as the first wristwatch in the world to ever include an automatic calendar, a feature that made the task of resetting the date obsolete. The watch mechanism was the same Casio used in the development of its LSI calculator devices, making the calendar so precise it was even able to show the February 29 date when used on a leap year.

One of the major Casio’s breakthroughs was the mass production of their watches. This development alone is what allowed Casio to expand internationally and cut production prices. It was thanks to their 1978 model, the F100, entirely made out of resin with a plastic case. It was a very light wristwatch compared to other brand’s pieces that were made of heavy metals that made the owner’s wrist tired. This model changed Casio’s business strategy forever, now being able to reach a large part of the world’s population by being affordable and reliable. That’s why during the 80’s Casio wristwatches were the best-selling ones internationally.

1980 marks the year Casio launch the first iteration of their most iconic wristwatch, the G-SHOCK line. It was a watch that was so durable it was even able to resist heavy impacts against concrete. It flipped around the idea that wristwatches were something delicate that should only be worn in controlled environments and protected inside cases for most of its functional life. Instead, the G-SHOCK could be used in any outdoor situation or harsh climate. Since its launch, the model has hit a home run in sales, so it has become the leading model for the brand. Recently, the model has launched a collaboration with K-POP Girl Group ITZY. The collection is inspired by each of the group’s members’ personalities and quirks. The Group’s logo is engraved on the dial and it comes with a special packaging featuring autographs from all the members. A collector piece for die-hard K-Pop fans. This leads us to 2023, a year that is always going to be remembered as the time the G-Shock model transcendent the physical realm. It may be hard to believe, but Casio brought the future to life by creating the first fully virtual watch in the world. Yes, a watch you can’t wear, but it exists, just not in a tangible way, the Virtual G-Shock NFT model. This watch could only be bought via the Ethereum cryptocurrency and was limited to 2,000 NFTs, also known as Non-Fungible Tokens. This model sold out in record time, and Casio is already developing the next set of NFT designs. This innovation will forever change the watchmaking scene. Think about it: an interactive virtual watch could potentially have endless features that not even a smartwatch can dream of. We can only speculate where this technology will lead us.

Some other big innovations by Casio are the 1985 DB-1000 databank model that was able to read handwritten words, making it ideal to keep track of notes and other forms of written data. In 1989 Casio released two milestone watches: the BM 100, a digital watch that could predict the weather, and one of its most important wristwatches the F-91W, the most-sold wristwatch in the entire world that has the record of an annual production of 3 million units. In 1992 Casio launched the BP 100, a wristwatch with a mechanism capable of monitoring blood pressure, widely recommended by medical professionals. The first wristwatch with a digital camera that allowed video calls was also invented by Casio, setting the foundations of what we know as a smartwatch today. And, speaking of smartwatches, in 2015 Casio launched its line of intelligent watches, the Smart Outdoor Watch Model with an Android system integrated.

Casio is one of the leading brands in watchmaking, and it achieves it without pretentiousness or snobbism, the brand compromise is to democratize technology and has been doing it perfectly since its foundation.

Seiko

“Seiko” is the Japanese word for exquisite, and also is homophonous with “success”, two words that describe Seiko as a brand. Another word that would summarize Seiko’s journey in the watchmaking scene would be “First”. The number of innovations and patents Seiko has provided to the world of digital watchmaking is too long to enlist. Seiko’s journey into the unknown began in 1881, when the young apprentice Kintaro Hattori, who started learning the trade of watchmaking when he was 13 years old, opened his workshop in Tokyo, Japan. Hattori started gaining popularity among Japanese watch enthusiasts due to the imported watches he was selling, rare pieces from already prestigious Western brands that couldn’t be found anywhere else in Japan.

Soon after, a humble workshop was not cutting it for the volume of work Seiko was managing, so Hattori moved operations to the famous current location in a busy corner of the Ginza district, where he built the Wako’s Clock Tower, a Neo-Reinassence-inspired building. It was inside this headquarters where Hattori came up with the Laurel model in 1913, the first fully Japanese-made wristwatch. From here on, Seiko’s contribution to the mechanical world of watchmaking started pushing its boundaries. Some “world-firsts” from Seiko include but are not limited to:

  • The first diver’s watch with a titanium case, the Diver’s 600M was launched in 1975. It was created thanks to a letter from a professional diver to Hattori stating that the depths a regular diver’s watch could endure weren’t enough anymore. As the name of the model states, the watch can endure up to 600 meters underwater. In 1986 this milestone was upgraded with the Diver’s 1000m model, the world’s first diver’s watch with a case made of ceramic.
  • TV watches weren’t a thing until Seiko created one. In 1983, the brand launched a device that allowed the user to listen to the radio and watch local TV while keeping time. Ideal for security guards or any other job with long idle hours. Then we jump to the start of the millennia, which Seiko kickstarted in the year 2000 with a revolutionary feature for digital watches: the first watch to ever use an integrated computer, the UC-2000 wrist computer, a retro-futuristic looking wristwatch able to store numerical data and addresses, and could even be connected to a keyword so the owner could keep notes as a diary.
  • In 1988 Seiko launched the first digital watch with a sun panel, able to capture solar energy and reuse it. Later that year, Seiko remade it with an even more innovative feature, the Seiko KINETIC model was able to charge the battery used to power the quartz using the energy generated by the owner’s movements.
  • Seiko’s E-Ink model, launched in 2006 is the first digital watch to ever feature a display with electronic ink technology akin to that of an E-Reader. This futuristic, cutting-edge-looking watch won the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve
  • Keeping up with contemporary technologies, Seiko presented in 2012 the world’s first watch to ever include a GPS function. The Seiko Astron GPS Solar model was capable of automatically detecting the timezone the owner was in and adjusting its time accordingly.

Seikos world first contributions

Seiko as a corporation is deeply embedded into the Japanese cultural imaginary since, in 1929, Seiko’s legendary pocket watch became the official timekeeping divide for the Japanese Government Railways, a commuting system that is still part of everyday Japanese life. During the World War II, Seiko provided watches for the Japanese troops. Later on, in 1964, Seiko became the official timekeeper for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. As a watchmaking company with a sports watch line, Seiko has been the FIFA World Cup official timekeeper multiple times and its devices are included in the racing videogame series Grand Turismo

Some of Seiko’s mechanical watches are so well-made they have up to 200 individual parts, and each one serves a purpose, that’s why the brand produces and manufactures all of these pieces inside their facilities with strict supervision. An example of this mechanical prowess is the Grand Seiko model, the most luxurious timepiece the brand has to offer. First launched in 1960, the Grand Seiko has been updated over the years, reinventing the purpose for which the watch was made: being the most accurate watch in the world, a feat Seiko achieved in 2020 with the Grand Seiko T0 Constant-Force Tourbillon Caliber model. The most complicated Seiko watch that also has the status of a luxury piece is the Credor Spring Drive Sonnerie model, a silent watch with a dial that displays its movement mechanism for the owner’s delight. A watch from the Credor line is guaranteed to up the wearer’s refinement in any prestigious event.

The brand has had a diverse set of ambassadors during its existence. Names like soccer star Landon Donovan, professional diver Becky Kagan, and multiple Wimbledon Series winner Novak Djokovic have endorsed the brand.

Iceland

JS Watch co. Reykjavik

Iceland’s first and most famous watch manufacturer, JS Watch Co. Reykjavik was founded in 2005 by master watchmaker Gilbert O. Gudjonsson in the city of Reykjavik. Gilbert is the charismatic face of the brand and a large part of the appeal that lures celebrities and enthusiasts alike. But Gilbert is not only a beloved individual, his abilities as a watchmaker are world-class. He was nominated once for the Icelandic Craftsman of the Year Award and the brand itself won the Shop of the Year Award in 2009. These are important feats for a relatively new company.

Gilbert set up shop in Laugavegur 62, Reykjavik, Iceland, a famous store and studio where personalities from all over the world are invited to meet him. JS Watch Co. Reykjavik timepieces are characterized by being assembled by hand, respecting tradition and craftsmanship that has proven to be successful. The watches present a mix of refinement and durability, some of the models can resist up to 1000 meters underwater. Gilbert likes to use the finest German surgical-grade Stainless Steel, custom decorations decided by the customer, and simple but extremely well-constructed dials.

Celebrities and personalities adore JS Watch Co. Reykjavik mostly due to the personal attention they get at the brand’s studio. The feeling of exclusivity this brand gives its customers is unparalleled. A few of the celebrities that have flown to Iceland with the sole purpose of meeting Gilbert and adding one of his creations to their collections include master chef Gordon Ramway, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, British actor Kit Harrington, and blockbuster superstar Tobey Maguire.

The brand has launched collaborations with the Icelandic Coast Guard and the Iceland National Soccer team, remarking that their timepieces are luxurious but practical, ideal for adventurers, athletes, and heavy workers. Models like the Gilbert Bóhem and the Gilbert vintage speak for the exquisite handcrafting and watchmaking Gilbert is famous for, while more exclusive models like the Frisland Goð, made from ashes collected from the Eyjafjallajökull, are a testament to the unparalleled feats the brand is aiming to achieve in the world of watchmaking.

Indonesia

John Hardy

Founded in 1975 on the exotic island of Bali, Indonesia, by former Canadian art student John Hardy, this luxury jewelry brand is truly one of a kind. John Hardy was personally mentored by the descendant of a goldsmith who used to work for the Royal Court in Bali, inspiring the brand ethos about creation. This is why John Hardy employs only locals in the manufacturing of his pieces, all of them done exclusively by hand. John Hardy firmly believes that true artisan excellence can only be achieved using human hands in every step of the process, putting at use the skills inherited from generation to generation, something a machine would never be capable of emulating.

Every single John Hardy jewelry piece and watch can take up to 10 months to complete, emphasizing the brand’s determination to tell a powerful and inspiring story with each finished work. Another unique aspect of the brand is its compromise with environmentalist ideals, all of the materials used in the process of manufacturing a John Hardy piece are obtained ethically and in compliance with human rights.

John Hardy’s style can be described as baroque, with a lot of intricate details inspired by Bali’s flora and fauna. Its signature motive is the oxidation that comes with the sterling silver tendency to turn black. While John Hardy’s style is rooted in tradition, it doesn’t mean their products don’t move forward on the side of technology, the brand has recently launched a diamond bracelet with a dial exclusively made to contain an Apple Watch. Anyone with a taste for timeless things paired with exclusive handcrafted luxury will acquire a taste for John Hardy’s jewelry and timepieces.
